A massive colony of these 'bad-hair-day' shellfish, called flame shells, has been discovered off the coast of Scotland. Its inhabitants are thought to number over 100 million, making it possibly the largest grouping of flame shells in the world.

There is a mysterious bright pink Lake in Western Australia. Its startling color remains a mystery and while scientists have proven it's not due to the presence of algae. At first it was thought that the color of algae that produce such Dunaliella salina, which produce a red dye, but their conjecture is not confirmed. Unlike the other salt lakes down unde, they still can't explain why it's pink.

When burrowing around, some insects unknowingly bring back to the surface traces of gold and other minerals. Working in a test site in West Australia, researchers from CSIRO discovered that ant and termite mounds contain high concentrations of gold, which indicates there is a deposit underneath. This is an environmentally friendly and cost effective method of searching for new mineral deposits.

The Finger Monkey

It is one of the smallest primates, and the smallest true monkey, with its body length ranging from 14 to 16 centimetres (5.5 to 6.3 in).

The pygmy marmoset, also known as "dwarf monkey" (Cebuella pygmaea) is native to South America.

The trees are grown extensively in Shiva temples in India. In Hindi it is called Shiv Kamal and also known as "Kailaspati". It is called the Nagalingam tree in Tamil. The flowers are called Shivalinga flowers in Hindi; Nagalinga Pushpa in Kannada; Nagamalli flowers or Mallikarjuna flowers in Telugu. Wobbegong sharks (pictured), or carpet sharks, have only one cone pigment gene, making them colour blind, a new study shows. (Cones are vision cells that are active in bright light and allow humans and animals to see colours. The three type

s of cones – red, green and blue – provide us with full colour vision.) The researchers hope that the discovery can lead to a greater understanding of the biology and behaviour of these megafauna.

Meet a serious contender for the title of world's ugliest fish - the blobfish. The blobfish grows to about 12 inches long and is found floating above the sea floor up to depths of 800 metres in the waters off southeastern Australia. They are inedible, but are often dragged up in fishing nets so their numbers are declining fast.

Biologists say they have unlocked the mystery of the vampire squid's strange umbrella-like mouth, which has eight arms attached by webbing. The 'squid from hell' feeds on corpses in the dark ocean, and the scientists found the arms are used to reach out and snare bits of food they then glue into a ball before eating
